Apple’s smart glasses may still be years away from launch, but the company already seems to be worried about one thing that could ruin them before launch.

Apple May Be Prioritizing Wearability Before It Pushes The Technology Too Far

Mark Gurman writes in his latest Power On newsletter that Apple is testing at least four frame styles for its first smart glasses. The reported options include a large rectangular design, a slimmer rectangular version, and two oval or circular variations. Apart from this, the company also appears to be exploring multiple colors like black, ocean blue, and light brown.

The design and form factor of Apple’s first smart glasses matter because they are not expected to support full augmented reality hardware. Instead, the wearable is described as a simpler product with cameras, microphones, and sensors. It would simply handle notifications, media playback, photo capture, and AI features while relying heavily on the iPhone.

All of these features combined give us a pretty good idea of what the smart glasses will look like and who the target audience is. Apple does not appear to be building a tiny Vision Pro for your face, but an iPhone companion that extends the ecosystem in a lighter and more practical way. The positioning would make it easier for mainstream users to accept the accessory.

The material choice also stands out, as Gurman claims that Apple is exploring acetate instead of ordinary plastic, while the front camera system could use an oval layout with indicator lights around it. In a category where rivals still struggle to look normal enough for daily use, design could become Apple’s biggest advantage.

Apple’s Bigger Bet May Be On AI Wearables Rather Than Just One Product

The wider strategy may be even more important than the glasses themselves, and as per Gurman, Apple sees these glasses as part of a broader AI wearable push. The company is also exploring camera-equipped AirPods, which points to a bigger plan around context-aware hardware.

In short, the company appears to be building toward an ecosystem where devices understand more about the world around you and respond in smarter ways. The same direction also fits with the company’s longer-term moves around Apple Intelligence, the iPhone 18 Pro, and the foldable iPhone.

If the current timeline holds, Apple could unveil the glasses in late 2026 or early 2027, with a release likely in spring or summer 2027. While it is still a long way off, the company would rather arrive late with something polished than rush out another awkward smart-glasses experiment.
