Apple’s AI efforts are in a critical condition and to tackle the situation, it is approaching Anthropic and OpenAI to lift Siri out of the dumps. Currently, Siri is no smarter than it was before the company announced Apple Intelligence, while the competition is excelling fast and in the right direction. This shows that the company is facing a two-fold defeat and there are no signs of improvements. The company should fix its AI division fast, especially when it is working on new products, including a cheaper MacBook with an A18 Pro chip.
Despite announcing Apple Intelligence, Siri remains dumb while rivals surge ahead with smarter AI every single day
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that Apple is in talks with both OpenAI and Anthropic to bring their AI models forward to boost Siri’s performance. Currently, Siri and ChatGPT do go hand-in-hand, but the process is quite tedious and time consuming. You first have to ask Siri and once she is not fond of the information, you are given a choice to indirectly contact ChatGPT. Since there is already a ChatGPT app on the iPhone, the entire process is quite unnecessary.
The company wants OpenAI and Anthropic to train their customized versions of large language models which could run on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute Infrastructure. What this means is that the large language models will completely rely and exist on Apple and operate on its custom silicon, which would give the iPhone maker more control over them. Apple is basically outsourcing its AI tasks and even though it might work, the company’s own efforts or its own rendition of the technology would be absent.
Gurman’s report also states that a full fledged LLM Siri approach is still active for 2026 and the project is being supervised by Mike Rowell and Craig Federighi. The executives were put in charge after Apple CEO Tim Cook “lost confidence” in John Giannandrea to lead the initiative. The analyst also claims that Anthropic’s approach for large language models currently better fits the company’s needs for Siri and the company has already deployed VP Adrian Perica to talk to Anthropic’s team.
Apple’s investigation into third-party models is at an early stage, and the company hasn’t made a final decision on using them, the people said. A competing project internally dubbed LLM Siri that uses in-house models remains in active development.
While Anthropic and Apple are moving forward with the joint AI venture, a deal has not yet been struck and the analyst points that the two companies are far apart when it comes to pricing. Anthropic is seeking a “multibillion-dollar annual fee that increases sharply each year” which has caused Apple to contemplate over working with OpenAI.
Apple’s internal teams are not happy with the company’s slow progress in the AI division, and some employees have already took off for other companies. Apple has been quite greedy with its employees as it faced compensation problems in the past. Meta and OpenAI, on the flip side, spent as much as $40 million per year. We will keep a close eye on the deal between Apple and Anthropic, so be sure too stick around.
