Earlier this week, Apple released the fourth beta of its upcoming iOS 26.4 update, and we now have a pretty good idea when it will be seeded to the public. While the company has not confirmed the exact release date, it was discovered that some AirPods Max 2 features, the second-generation model that was announced recently, require the new iOS 26.4 update to work. The clearest window is now late March to early April, which is when you should expect the update to hit your iPhone.
Apple’s New AirPods Max 2 Has Made The iOS 26.4 Timeline Easier To Predict
The bigger clue came from Apple’s AirPods Max 2 announcement, where Apple tied several new features, including Live Translation and lossless audio over USB-C, to iOS 26.4 and matching software on iPad and Mac. Since the headphones are expected to be available in early April, Apple will most certainly need the software out by then, or potentially before it.
This makes the release less of a random guess and more of a pattern. Note that Apple is already in the fourth beta cycle, which usually means the company is closer to polishing than adding anything major to the platform. However, something can always break in testing, but it is very seldom that this happens. We can expect the Release Candidate update to arrive soon, followed by the final iOS 26.4 update for the iPhone.
The Most Realistic iPhone Release Window Now Looks Like Late March Or Early April
Apple’s past release timing also supports the same estimate, as iOS 18.4 was released to the public on March 31, 2025, which falls in the same late March to early April time frame as iOS 26.4. However, this does not confirm the exact date this time, but it does make the current prediction look a lot more believable.
That also makes this a useful update to watch even if you do not care about the headphones. iOS 26.4 is shaping up to be one of those bridging updates that quietly adds support for newer hardware, while also bringing numerous additions for the iPhone.
