If Apple is about to lower the price of entry into the Mac ecosystem, it will not do it quietly. A new report suggests the company may brand its upcoming A18 Pro powered MacBook as the MacBook Neo, and that single word changes the playing field. This is not just a cheaper Mac, as it could be Apple creating an entirely new tier.
The MacBook Neo Branding Could Redefine Apple’s Entry Level Laptop Strategy
MacRumors first spotted references to an unreleased model internally labeled “MacBook Neo” model (Model A3404) in regulatory filings. The same report reiterates that the machine is expected to run on the A18 Pro chip rather than Apple’s higher end M series chips. If the news has any heft to it, this would mark the first modern Mac built around iPhone class architecture instead of a dedicated Mac chip.
The shift is quite significant, as the A18 Pro chip is engineered for high efficiency and strong single core performance, making it ideal for everyday workflows such as browsing, streaming, document editing, and light creative tasks. For most mainstream users, that is the bulk of what a laptop is used for. The limitation would likely appear in sustained heavy workloads compared to M series models, particularly in professional grade tasks like long video renders.
The “Neo” branding also feels a bit deliberate, as Apple has never used this name for a Mac, which makes it easier to position the device clearly below the MacBook Air without confusing buyers. Instead of stretching the Air downward, the A18 Pro powered MacBook Neo could be Apple’s way of establishing a clean, recognizable entry point aimed at students and first time Mac users.
If the MacBook Neo name becomes official, it signals more than a budget device. It suggests Apple is comfortable segmenting the Mac lineup by silicon class, much like it does with iPhones and iPads. The upcoming announcement should clarify pricing, positioning, and how aggressively Apple intends to compete in the sub $800 laptop market. So far, Apple has removed the MacBook Neo link, which further confirms that the machine will feature a new name.
