Apple is all in on making thinner smartphones, and the iPhone Air is the perfect example of this. However, it doesn’t shy away from thickness either, as long as it conveys utility. As per the latest details, the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to be noticeably thicker than the current iPhone 17 Pro.
Leaker Fixed Focus Digital claims that Apple’s manufacturing partner, Tata, points to a thicker aluminum frame and a larger rear camera housing. The report suggests the iPhone 18 Pro could measure between 9.9mm and 10.9mm thick, compared to the iPhone 17 Pro’s 8.75mm.
We have previously seen dummy units of the iPhone 18 Pro, and they all boasted a larger camera bump, which aligns with the latest information from the Weibo-based leaker. However, what’s different is that the rumor also suggests that the entire chassis may be getting thicker as well.
The same source also claims that Apple will continue using aluminum for the iPhone 18 Pro because of its better heat dissipation qualities. The company shifted back to aluminum with the launch of the iPhone 17 Pro models, as only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro featured a titanium chassis.
The leaker additionally advised potential buyers to be cautious with the latest finishes, citing reports of discoloration and chipping on some iPhone 17 Pro models. Apple might have taken note of the complaints and could have worked on a fix, which we are currently not familiar with.
The iPhone Air Could Be Shifting Priorities Inside Apple And Users’ Mindsets
If you want a thin device, go for the iPhone Air, but if you want an iPhone with bigger and better battery life, the Pro models are the way to go. That’s basically the entire crux of it, and the bigger story may not be the added thickness itself, but a sign that Apple is finally separating its priorities across iPhone models instead of trying to make every device as thin as possible.
With the iPhone Air expected to remain Apple’s ultra-thin option, the Pro lineup no longer has to win the thinness race. This little shift gives Apple more freedom to prioritize battery life, sustained performance, cooling, and camera hardware without worrying about adding a little extra bulk.
