Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro at its highly anticipated ‘Surprise and Shine’ event on September 9, and there were quite a handful of upgrades. The iPhone 18 Pro received more than its fair share of upgrades, but I wouldn’t buy it this year.
Instead, my eyes are locked on the iPhone Duo. Call me a sheep, but the Duo is quite different than an iPhone that has remained pretty much the same year-over-year.
The Duo offers a new form factor, a new mechanical user experience, and a plethora of new additions that I’m very excited about.
But the Duo is not the reason why I’m skipping the iPhone 18 Pro Max this year.
Redesigned ’20th Anniversary iPhone’ Is Coming Next Year
Mark Gurman recently reported that Apple plans to release its special 20th anniversary iPhone next year. More so, it is also expected to feature the biggest redesign since the iPhone X.
The iPhone X revolutionized the smartphones that we use today. It brought an all-screen design, Face ID, and basically a brand-new user experience. It switched from the traditional button-based input approach to a gesture-based solution.
I’m expecting the same kind of transition next year, and it will be good, from what I can deduce from the iPhone Duo launch.
The iPhone will be turning 20. It will be a big day. So what should I be looking forward to? And you should too?
The Biggest Redesign Since The iPhone X
In various reports, it’s been said that the so-called “iPhone 20” will come with major changes that some users have been waiting for a while.
It will feature curved glass that wraps around the edges. So a truly bezel-less iPhone. To be honest, I think Liquid Glass was made for the 20th anniversary iPhone, and I’m pretty sure Apple has been cooking more than that internally.
We could see sensors moving under the display for an immersive experience, better cameras, an A21 Pro chip, which will continue to be built on TSMC’s 2nm process, and much more.
The iPhone Duo is an indication that the iPhone 20 would be amazing.
Why The iPhone Duo This Year?
I have been using the iPhone since the early days, and I’ve been pretty happy with it, no complaints. However, I’m also kind of bored.
The user experience of the iPhone 18 Pro would be pretty similar to that of the iPhone 17 Pro, or the iPhones that launched before it. It’s not bad, per se, but you can say that I’m used to it.
This year, I want that feeling to change. I want to feel as excited as I was when I first switched from Android to the iPhone 6. The only way to achieve that is to not buy the iPhone 18 Pro that physically resembles my iPhone 17 Pro.
I want a new software experience, which we have seen is quite novel and complements the folding behavior perfectly. It brings multitasking to the table, a dual, split-screen setup, which is perfect for my work when I’m not near my work desk.
It has the performance and the screen real estate that I need. Plus, it can also act as a small phone, which, if you’re following me, you’d know. I loved the iPhone 13 mini, but sadly, Apple stopped making them.
That’s it, I’m getting the best of both worlds.
