Apple may be preparing a much more expensive MacBook for buyers who want the newest display technology and do not mind paying for it. A new report from Bloomberg claims that the company is working on a higher-end MacBook Ultra that could feature an OLED panel, support for touchscreen, and a price above today’s MacBook Pro lineup. If that happens, Apple would not just be refreshing the MacBook Pro, but it could be carving a new premium tier at the very top of the Mac family.
Apple May Be Preparing A More Expensive OLED MacBook With Touchscreen Support Above The Current MacBook Pro Line
Mark Gurman states in his latest Power On newsletter that Apple is planning an all-new high-end Mac laptop that may be positioned above the current MacBook Pro rather than simply replacing it. The device would bring two major changes that have been discussed for a while, namely an OLED display and touch input. These two changes alone are significant upgrades for the Mac, but the bigger story may be how Apple chooses to position it in the lineup.
This is where the “MacBook Ultra” angle becomes quite interesting. The name itself is still reported, not confirmed, but it would make strategic sense if Apple wants to separate this machine from the standard Pro models. Apple just refreshed the MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, while Gurman also reported that the company raised MacBook Air and Pro prices recently as it deals with higher memory costs. A new OLED touch model above the current Pro line would give Apple a clean excuse to push pricing even higher without forcing the entire MacBook Pro range upward all at once.
The Bigger Shift May Be Apple Stretching The Mac Lineup At Both Ends
The report also fits a broader pattern, as Apple launched the $599 MacBook Neo as part of its budget laptop strategy. It pushes the Mac lineup further downmarket for students and budget buyers. A more expensive OLED touchscreen laptop at the top would do the exact opposite, giving Apple a wider pricing ladder and clearer product separation from entry level to flagship. In simple terms, the company would no longer be relying on one MacBook Pro family to serve every type of premium customer.
Do take the news with a grain of salt, as nothing is official yet beyond the initial speculations, so the final name and exact positioning could still change. However, if Apple does move forward with a MacBook Ultra, it could be doing more than just adding a touchscreen to the Mac. It may be creating a new halo laptop designed to sit above the current Pro models, and that could reshape the Mac lineup in a much bigger way than a normal yearly refresh.
