The iPhone has a very limited setup as far as Apple Intelligence is concerned, and while Apple’s AI plans feel unfinished, the company may finally be moving toward something a lot more flexible. Instead of keeping Siri tied to one outside chatbot, Apple is reportedly preparing a bigger shift that could turn the assistant into a more open AI hub across the iPhone.
Apple May Open Siri To Claude And Other AI Apps In iOS 27 Through A New Extension System
According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is planning to let Siri integrate with rival AI assistants in iOS 27 through a new Extension system. This could allow apps like Claude to work directly with Siri once developers update their apps for support.
Users would also be directed to a new App Store section from within Siri to add extra AI services, which suggests Apple wants this to become a broader platform feature rather than a one-off partnership. The company’s direction also fits with Apple’s wider Siri overhaul, especially after reports that the company is testing a more chatbot-like Siri experience for iOS 27.
What makes this even more interesting is that Apple is not moving away from Google at the same time. The report says Apple still has a deal to use Gemini models for unreleased Siri and Apple Intelligence features tied to personal context and in-app control, even though those promised capabilities still have not stopped. In other words, Apple appears to be separating the AI engine it uses behind the scenes from the chatbot apps users may be able to call on directly through Siri.
Apple is already building the groundwork for this approach, as starting with iOS 26.4, third-party chatbots can already integrate with CarPlay if developers update their apps, so iOS 27 may simply extend that openness to Siri itself. If Apple follows through with its plans, Siri could stop being just Apple’s assistant and start acting more like the front door to whichever AI service users actually prefer.
Apple will announce iOS 27 and all other platforms at its WWDC 2026 event, which is scheduled to take place on June 8. Share your expectations with us in the comments below.
