Apple plans to launch the iPhone 17 lineup later this year, potentially in September with a handful of new design variations and front-facing features. However, the device will also come with upgraded internals and the latest news suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro models will come with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM for enhanced Apple Intelligence features.
iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to be equipped with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM to bolster Apple Intelligence upgrades
The news was shared by a prominent analyst Jeff Pu in a research note (via 9to5mac), claiming that the iPhone 17 Pro models will come with upgraded RAM capacity to bolster the company’s front-facing Apple Intelligence upgrades. The report claims that both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will come with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, allowing the device to perform better than the rest of the lineup.
“Meanwhile iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are expected to migrate to LPDDR5 12GB,” Pu said in the note.” This transition alone will contribute to a 3.5% YoY increase in smartphone DRAM content across an estimated 100 million new iPhone units.”
This is not the first time that we are hearing details on the iPhone 17 Pro models getting upgraded RAM capacity, as Pu has doubled down on his past reports, which only gives credibility to the news. Additionally, industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also previously stated that the premium models of the iPhone 17 will feature upgraded memory capacity.
With the rumours of upgraded memory in hand, we can safely presume that Apple is working on improving the existing Apple Intelligence features and possibly working on plenty more. However, it brings us to question if the upgraded Apple Intelligence features will be available on the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air models.
At this current stage, all iPhone 16 models, including the iPhone 16e, features 8GB of RAM, which puts the ‘Pro’ models into perspective. Apple would aim to keep the iPhone 17 Pro models as its highest end devices in terms of performance, hardware, and the cameras, so it is safe to presume that the RAM count will be higher than the rest of the lineup.
In terms of design, the entire iPhone 17 lineup will feature a camera bar at the back, but the ‘Pro’ models will come with the largest bar, housing a triple lens camera setup, LiDAR Scanner, LED Flash, and the microphone. The devices are slated to feature an aluminum frame instead of titanium but it remains to be seen if the company is willing to make a shift.
We have also heard that the company is planning to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 17 Pro models thanks to the “metalens” technology. Do you think the iPhone 17 Pro models will be equipped with 12GB of RAM instead of 8GB?
