M5 Ultra Mac Studio Coming This Year With Major Performance Gains, M7 Ultra Chip Reserved for 2028 Model

The Mac Studio is currently Apple’s most powerful Mac, and every few years, the machine keeps getting better with newer chips. This year, the company is expected to upgrade the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, which would be a long-awaited upgrade for the Studio.

Apple Is Preparing Two Mac Studio Updates With Better Cooling For On Device AI Workloads

The current version of the Mac Studio features an M4 Max chip and an M3 Ultra chip, which are pretty behind compared to the latest chips on the market. As per the latest report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Mac Studio with an M5-based chip will launch later this year, potentially with an M5 Ultra chip.

Going forward, the company also plans to release the same machine in 2028 with an M7 Ultra chip, which will possibly be based on TSMC’s 2nm process. This year’s refresh will only come with a chip upgrade, as there are no design changes reported for the machine. However, the 2028 version could be a little different, but we have not heard any details on the matter as of yet.

The M3 Ultra Mac Studio currently has a long wait time before it is delivered to customers. The reason? The massive increase in  demand and lack of adequate supply are causing delivery delays. Moreover, the company has also increased the prices of its products, which will serve as an important factor if you are willing to get one right now.

The 2028 model of the Mac Studio will skip the M6 chip altogether, as the company has done with prior models. The M5 Ultra would be specifically built to take care of the rising AI workflows ambitions of the company. Here’s what the report says:

There are two Mac Studio updates in Apple’s pipeline: an M5 Ultra version due this year and an M7 Ultra update targeted for 2028. I’m told Apple has also been working on internal changes to the high-powered desktop, including a better heat sink to improve thermal performance as the machine takes on more demanding on-device AI workloads. I’m not expecting a major redesign, at least not with the M5 Ultra model.

As of right now, we are not familiar with what else is coming with the upcoming machines, so be sure to take the news with a grain of salt. However, a better thermal solution is more than a welcome addition, as it will be able to deliver sustained performance over longer sessions. What are your thoughts on the subject?
