Apple Launches M5 Pro And M5 Max MacBook Pro With 24-Hour Battery, Wi-Fi 7, And AI Boost

After announcing the iPhone 17e and new M4 iPad Air yesterday, Apple has officially seen fit to announce the newly refreshed version of the MacBook Pro lineup with the new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, pushing its professional notebooks further into high-performance territory. While the exterior and design of the device remain the same, the real story and upgrades are on the inside. Apple is clearly making room for the OLED MacBook Pro, which is slated to arrive later this year.

However, Apple is clearly tightening its grip on creators, developers, and power users who want desktop-class output without sacrificing portability.

M5 Pro and M5 Max Focus on Raw Performance Gains, As MacBook Pro Hardware Remains Untampered With

At the heart of these refreshed MacBook Pro models are the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, built on Apple’s new Fusion Architecture with up to an 18-core CPU and a next-generation GPU that includes a Neural Accelerator in every core. The purpose of this addition is to boost AI performance up to 4x over the previous generation and up to 8x versus the initial M1 Pro and M1 Max models.

These chips significantly enhance professional-level workflows with:

  • Up to 4x faster AI image generation and LLM prompt processing than older MacBook Pro models
  • Up to 2x faster SSD speeds, plus 1TB (M5 Pro) and 2TB (M5 Max) as standard
  • Up to 24 hours of battery life with all-day productivity on a single charge
  • Connectivity upgrades including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and multiple Thunderbolt 5 ports

Graphics and compute power is doubled in the M5 Max over the Pro variants, and both versions support large memory configurations of up to 128GB for massive datasets, rendering, and machine learning tasks.

What This Means For Apple’s Pro Laptop Strategy In A Competitive AI-Driven Era

The refresh isn’t about cosmetic redesigns, but about reclaiming performance leadership in professional notebooks. By integrating powerful AI processing directly into the chip and standardizing massive base SSD capacities, Apple positions the MacBook Pro for creators, data scientists, engineers, and developers who run local AI workflows without relying on the cloud.

Battery life, connectivity, and display remain best in class, while macOS Tahoe promises tighter system-wide AI integration. For many professionals, this could justify upgrading now instead of waiting for an M6-powered OLED MacBook Pro with a new design.
