Apple’s foldable iPhone is back in the rumor mill, but this time, the real story is not about the hardware and design. A new report claims that Apple’s first foldable iPhone could begin shipping in December of this year, which would place it after the expected September debut of the iPhone 18 lineup. What this means is that Apple could be working on a very different iPhone launch strategy, possibly one that could reshape how the entire lineup is sold.
A December Shipping Window Could Signal A Bigger Shift In How Apple Plans To Sell Future iPhones
Apple has already changed its iPhone launch strategy for some of its models. The budget “e” variants of the handsets are launched in the springtime, which is evident with the recently launched iPhone 17e. Moreover, it was also previously reported that the company could see fit to segregate the base models. If prior reports have any heft to them, the iPhone 18 Pro models could launch in September, while the base iPhone 18 could launch alongside the iPhone 18e in early 2027.
This leaves the iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone launch dedicated to September. According to Barclays analyst Tim Long (via MacRumors), supply chain checks point to foldable iPhone shipments beginning in December 2026. The same investor note also suggests that the regular iPhone 18 may not launch beside the ‘Pro’ models at all, and could instead arrive in the spring of 2027. The last part is in accordance with prior reports and adds weight to them.
Apple’s new iPhone launch strategy would definitely help buyers and grab a lot of attention, as the entire lineup has become more crowded over the years. A staged release schedule could make each model easier to understand and give them their own dedicated, non-shadowed spot.
The ‘Pro’ models would remain the flagship choice for many, while the foldable could sit above them as a premium niche device. The standard or base models could target buyers who are more price-conscious without getting buried under the hype of a major September event.
Apple’s Foldable iPhone May Matter More As A Strategy Shift Than A New Form Factor
The foldable itself will obviously grab attention, but the bigger value here is what it says about Apple’s direction. If Apple really launches the ‘Fold’ later in the year, a few months after the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro, it may be trying to avoid having one unusual product disrupt sales of the models that move the most units. This could be a deliberate decision from the company’s end rather than supply chain delays, especially since the foldable iPhone will launch at a much more premium price tag.
This is also where the comparison between the Pro and the Fold becomes more useful, as Apple may not be treating the latter as the future of the lineup right away. Instead, it could be treating it as a separate tier, something closer to a halo product that expands the brand without replacing the standard iPhone formula too quickly. It could be something similar to what the company did with the launch of the first-generation Vision Pro.
If the report has any heft to it, the foldable iPhone could launch in December. The analyst also claims another major aspect, suggesting that the iPhone 18 Plus will launch next year as well, which is quite peculiar, as the ‘Plus’ variant has been replaced with the iPhone Air. Potentially, the analyst is talking about the iPhone Air 2, unless Apple surprises us with another Plus-branded iPhone. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
