Most of the early attention around the iPhone 18 lineup has gone straight to the Pro models, where the A20 Pro chip, the smaller Dynamic Island, and the usual design talk are doing most of the heavy lifting. However, the base iPhone 18 will come with its own set of upgrades, which will convince some to forgo the premium models.
The iPhone 18 Could Get A Major Memory Upgrade, And It May Matter More Than The A20 Pro
There has always been a gap between the base and the iPhone 18 Pro models, and to be fair, that’s intentional on Apple’s part. Over the years, the base model has become so well-rounded that some users do not bother choosing the flashier upgrade. This goes for the design as well as the internals.
If Apple really gives the regular iPhone 18 more memory, it could end up being one of those upgrades that sounds boring for a few seconds, then starts making a lot of sense the longer you sit with it.
A new leak from analyst Dan Nystedt corroborates that the standard iPhone 18 could come with 12GB of RAM, the same amount of memory that Apple brought to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models. While it does not sound flashy like a new design or camera upgrades, it will give the device a major boost to close the gap with the Pro models.
More memory means Apple is gearing up the iPhone 18 for a heavier AI future, especially as iOS 27 gets closer and Apple Intelligence keeps expanding. So this is not a spec bump sitting there just to look pretty, but could end up shaping how well the phone holds up once the smarter features start stacking up.
Additionally, it also makes the whole iPhone 18 lineup feel more layered, as the Pro models will get more attention with the A20 Pro and the more visible changes, but the regular models will quietly gain more headroom.
When you put Apple’s broader iPhone 18 strategy into perspective, the iPhone 18’s upgrades make more sense. For instance, the foldable iPhone is already getting attention due to its size and form factor against the iPad mini, while the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to keep pushing the premium boundaries in the industry. Against all of this, it feels like Apple is making sure that the standard version does not show up underdressed to its own party.
While the A20 Pro chip will be the highlight of the internals powering the iPhone 18 lineup, more memory is more than a welcome addition, and perhaps a better one at that, considering the AI era in smartphones is starting to become more utility-focused. What do you think?
