Today, Apple has seen fit to release the iOS 26.4.2 update for the iPhone, but this is not the kind of update that brings new looks or tools. Instead, it is a pretty standard maintenance release that focuses on privacy-related issues, with a handful of adjustments for Liquid Glass accessibility.
iOS 26.4.2 Fixes A Notification Privacy Issue As Apple Also Expands Liquid Glass Controls
You can update to the latest iOS 26.4.2 update through the stock Settings app on your iPhone. Simply launch the app and head over to General > Software Update > and install the latest version. Apple says that the update includes bug fixes and security updates, but there’s a bit more to it.
The biggest change in iOS 26.4.2 is a fix for a bug that could allow notifications marked for deletion to be unexpectedly retained on the device. Apple says the update also retroactively purged any notification copies that may have been improperly stored, making this a more important privacy fix than the small version number suggests. The release also comes shortly after iOS 26.4.1 and while Apple is continuing its iOS 26.5 testing.
While Apple has not directly mentioned the FBI, the fix likely follows a recent report involving the agency retrieving Signal notifications from a defendant’s iPhone even after the app had been deleted. This notion is not part of Apple’s release notes, so it should be treated as context rather than a confirmed explanation from Apple.
Here’s a summary of what is new and what has changed:
- The update fixes a bug that could retain notifications that were supposedly deleted.
- iOS 26.4.2 also removes previously retained notification copies from affected devices.
- iOS 26.4 adds a new Reduce Bright Effects toggle for Liquid Glass interactions.
- iOS 26.4 updates Reduce Motion so it more reliably reduces Liquid Glass animations.
So no, this is not a flashy new update with tons of front-facing additions, but it is still worth installing because it patches a privacy-related issue while also sitting alongside Apple’s latest Liquid Glass accessibility refinements, with bigger Siri changes still expected later with iOS 27.
