Apple Is Telling Users To Stay On iOS 26.5 Whether They Like It Or Not

Apple has closed the downgrade window for iOS 26.5, which means that iPhone users can no longer return to iOS 26.4.2 after updating. It is a typical move from Apple, but it still matters if the latest version is causing battery, performance, or stability issues on your device.

Apple Is No Longer Signing iOS 26.4.2, Closing One Of The Few Escape Routes From iOS 26.5

Apple usually keeps an older iOS version signed for a short period of time after releasing a new update. This gives users a small window to downgrade if something goes wrong. However, that window is now closed for iOS 26.4.2, which means iOS 26.5 is effectively the only public path forward for most users.

For casual users, this probably will not change much. iOS 26.5 appears to be a relatively stable build so far, and Apple typically stops signing older updates once it is comfortable with the latest version. Still, the timing can be annoying for users who prefer having control after installing a new update.

Downgrading From iOS 26.5 Is No Longer An Option Even If You Badly Want To

Once Apple stops signing an iOS release, Finder and iTunes can no longer install it normally. So, if you updated to iOS 26.5 and now notice worse battery life, bugs in the interface or while opening apps, stutters, or overheating issues, you are stuck waiting for Apple’s next fix.

Since jailbreaking has died over the years, the importance of Apple signing an older iOS build has significantly reduced. Most users are fine on the latest version of iOS, plus they get new features and security updates. However, the signing process would hold immense value if iOS 26 was still in its early phase.

With WWDC around the corner, Apple is expected to shift attention toward iOS 27 soon, while the iOS 26.6 beta could also appear around the same window. Unless Apple releases iOS 26.5.1 for urgent bug fixes, iOS 26.5 may be the version most users are staying on for now.
